We ended the week by having a Chinese celebration. The students made dragon masks in centers this week and Red Bowl graciously donated chopsticks and fortune cookies for us. The students had a blast using their chopsticks on Friday will eating rice. Enjoy the pictures below of some of the students enjoying their rice with chopsticks.

The students enjoyed a great visit with Family Trust Federal Credit Union Today. They came to talk to the students about the importance of saving money. We asked them to come speak to the students since we have been talking about families and how families have to make choices about what they spend money on. The students were given the opportunity to shop in a "school store". They were given the challenge to either save their money or spend it. Mrs. Collins from Family Trust kept telling them "The more they save now, the more they get later." It was really interesting watching the students decide whether to save or spend their money. We did have a super saver though. Congrats to Dayton for saving all his "store money" and ending up the grand prize winner!
The students and I enjoyed exploring Mexican culture this week. We discussed how the schools, homes, and jobs in Rock Hill can be similar or different from those in Mexico. We also enjoyed chips and salsa for snack one day and broke our pinatas on Friday. A big thank you to all the parents who sent in candy for the pinata. We had more than enough and the kids loved making and breaking the pinata. See the pictures below of each class' pinata and then the kids rushing to get their treats. :)
This past week the students and I enjoyed "Mapping out our Culture" on the bulletin board map in the hallway. It was very interesting to find out that the students have cultural ties from Mexico, Greece, Norway, Ireland, France, and Belgium. The students also enjoyed sharing artifacts from different cultures with one another. Below are 2 pictures showing how we mapped out our first grade culture.
Another great week is behind us. The students did a great job discussing what it means to be a responsible member of a family. The students made responsibility houses that show what jobs or responsibilities they help with at home. I have posted pictures of their houses on their websites. Be sure to check them out!
