The students and I had lots of fun this week completing our pumpkin activities. The students were challenged to care for their "baby" pumpkins all week. It was great to see some of the students make little homes and beds to carry their pumpkins in so they would have a place to stay. On Friday, the students got to paint their pumpkins, name their pumpkin, measure them with paperclips and cubes and then discover whether or not they sank or floated in a tub of water. Students also created jack-o-lanterns and had to describe them using adjectives. Each class also made a class pumpkin for the Rosewood Pumpkin contest. Mrs. Webb and the Blue class made an owl based on the book Owl Moon and Madame Tyson and the Green Group made Madeline from the story Madeline. Enjoy our pictures below from all our activities this week.

The students looked great sporting their spirit and team gear during Red Ribbon Week! Enjoy the pictures below of both classes on wear "red" day and "team" up against drugs day! Family Trust Credit Union came to speak to the students today about the importance of saving money and making good/wise choices with their money. The staff talked to the students about what a credit union is and what it's job is as well as talked to them about the three different ways you can earn or get money at such a young age (doing chores, getting some for your birthday, finding it). The students then got the chance to spend or save some "play money" as they shopped at the Webb Mart store. The students were told "the more you save now, the more you get later" before they shopped and throughout the presentation. Each of our students got the chance to shop and three of our students all saved 75 cents out of their dollar. These students not only got what they bought but several additional prizes as well. It was a great lesson to learn and the students thoroughly enjoyed it! Check out pictures below and our high savers: Brendan, Jayden and Ari! To finish up our first week of studying about China and the families and culture of this country the students got the opportunity to eat rice and vegetables with chopsticks. The students loved this activity and it was quite a sight to see them attempt to eat using the chopsticks properly. While enjoying their snack, we also read the Chinese Fairy Tale, Lon Po Po, the Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood. We then made a comparison of this version and the American version and noted the similarities and differences between the two. Enjoy the pictures of the students below eating with their chopsticks! This week we spent time discussing what adjectives are. We found out through using our five senses and observing things in nature that adjectives describe nouns. Adjectives can be color words, size words, describe how something feels, sounds, or even tastes. The students got to experience creating adjectives by using their five senses to describe Fun Dip candy. Students had to come up with five adjectives that described the fun dip, including what it felt like, smelled like, tasted like, looked like, and how the package of Fun Dip sounded.
Today our school celebrated National Walk To School Day. Several of our students met at Dr. Epps office on Celnese this morning to walk to school. The students received goodie bags from Dr. Epps office for participating along with bottled waters and healthy snacks. It was great to see some of our students get some exercise this morning by walking to school.
The students had a great time today with our first Book Buddies experience for the year. Book Buddies will take place every Friday. We will be partnering with Mrs. Casey Davis and Ms. Katie Coward's 5th grade classes. We are partnering with two classes to make sure that all of our kids (blue/green) get equal time with buddies. During our Book Buddy sessions our students and the fifth graders will be reading and discussing books. Both sets of students will be reading. Later on, the students will help each other with other literacy and language skills. We are hoping to even plan several activities with our Book Buddies through out the year. Enjoy the pictures below of some of the kids reading with their buddies today :) |
