The students spent this whole week working in groups to create new rules for our classroom or Rosewood. The students had to apply what they learned about rules, their importance, the absence of rules, and one's beliefs and values to help come up with their group's rule. Students then made posters representing their rule and presented them to the class. The students then reviewed the voting process by voting for their favorite :new" rule. Finally, students reflected on their rule and had to determine what would happen if their rule was broken and why it was an important rule to have. Below are pictures of the students creating their posters and sharing their final product.

In celebration of International Dot Day on Monday, September 15th we asked the students how they wanted to make a "mark" on our world. We listened to the book, The Dot, by Peter Reynolds and talked about how each of us has our own gifts and can make a "mark" in the world in some way. We asked the students what they wanted to be when they grew up and created collages indicating their responses. Below are the collages. They turned out really cute! Hope you enjoy!
We had a blast today on our Field Trip to Publix. A big THANK YOU to the parents that went with us. (Mrs. Whitman, Mrs. Walk, Mrs. Robinson, and Ms. Beachman) The students took a tour of the store and visited the various departments. They got to watch a baker make a rose out of icing for a wedding cake, view live and fresh seafood in the meat department and even went in the storage area in the back. The students got to go in the big walk-in freezer for just a few seconds to see how cold it has to be to keep the food fresh. The students even went home with a cookie card good for 12 free cookies each time they visit Publix. It was definitely a fun time had by all!
This week the students and I have discussed how sometimes not all rules are fair to everyone and that sometimes it is necessary or appropriate for people to demand or ask for a change in that particular rule. As a follow-up activity to this concept, we read the story Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type, and had a discussion about how the animals of the farm demanded a change from their owner, Farmer Brown. We took this a step further and brainstormed ideas or things that we would like to add or change about Rosewood. Each class participated in a shared writing with me where we wrote a letter to Mrs. DiStasio and Mr. Ward asking for some changes. The green class asked for a swimming pool to be added to the playground area, while the blue class asked if the students and the teachers could switch places for a day. Below are the letters that they helped me write and we are eagerly awaiting our responses! |
