I want to think from all the excitement and enthusiasm this was the students favorite day of the year! After about a month's worth of work, the students were finally able to present their books they wrote about Alex and Enzo to the Martinez brothers. With my guidance and the help of several other teachers in the building, the students interviewed, wrote and edited, illustrated and even published their books by typing their pages. It was a lot of hard work but with a lot of cooperation, creativity, and commitment, we were able to finally finish our stories and read them to Alex and Enzo. After reading the stories, the students were then able to go outside and see Alex and Enzo do some of their favorite tricks and actually play some soccer with the kids. It was great to see the students interact with Alex and Enzo, and I know this is something they will never forget! They even autographed a soccer ball for us to keep to use at recess! Check out some of the pictures and video clips of the students reading the books below!

We had a great time today on our field trip to Glencarin Gardens! Both classes had fun and we had some tired kids on our hands by the end of the trip! A big THANK YOU to all the parents/grandparents who went with us on our trip. We enjoyed a picnic lunch at the park, got to walk around and see the turtles and even a water snake, made a map of the garden, walked and looked at the plants in the children's garden and even got to dig in different types of soil. I think one of the students' favorite things by far were seeing all the worms and critters as they were digging in the soil. Enjoy some of our photos below! Today the students got the chance to compare gummy worms and Earthworms. After talking about how worms and other insects are helpful to plants the students got the chance to observe and watch how earthworms begin to make their tunnels in the soil. Using the earthworms the students practiced their math skills by measuring how long they were with paperclips and also reviewed using adjectives as they had to describe them. Students also had to determine whether or not the earthworms or gummy worms were living or non-living and give a reason why. We put the earthworms in soil in mason jars and covered them with black construction paper to make it dark for the worms. We will check on them next week to see if the worms have dug tunnels and aerated the soil. Check out the pictures below of the students with the earthworms. We got the privilege of interviewing Alex and Enzo Martinez today. We have been working on research and writing non-fiction books for this semester. We interviewed them today and will take their responses are write non-fiction books about them. Each section will write their own book. We are then going to have them come back in May to present the books to them and to have them show us some of their soccer skills! Below are some pictures of the interview session.
The kids had a lot of fun this week dressing up in celebration of Read Across America Week. The kids got to wear crazy hats, wear t-shirts from places they traveled, wear green for Green Eggs and Ham Day, wear jerseys or clothes with numbers on them and dress-up like their favorite Dr. Seuss Character. Enjoy the pictures below from this week. The students had a blast last Friday, with our Valentine's Day Celebration. The students spent the morning passing out valentines to one another. We also read stories about Valentine's Day and they graphed candy hearts in Madame Tyson's class. In the afternoon, the students enjoyed goodies provided by many of the parents. It was a great day had by all! In connection to our new unit in writing, the students and I enjoyed making s'mores this week. We discussed earlier what the purpose of "How To" books are and how they are written in a way that will teach someone how to do something or make something. As a beginning activity to this unit, we made s'mores and then wrote the steps of how to make a s'more down as a class. Students made their own s'mores and then completed their own How To Make A S'more book and art craft. We also tied in our inquiries about the sun and talked about how the heat from the sun could also be used to melt the chocolate when making a s'more. The students writing and art work will be displayed at the First Grade Learning Celebration. Please enjoy the pictures below. We celebrated the 101st day of school on Tuesday, February 3rd. The students wrote about what they would do if they were 101 years old. We also took their pictures with the Aging App and it transformed them into what they would look like if they were older. The students had a great time looking at each others pictures and had some laughs too! The students also worked hard writing 101 word and enjoyed a snack telling them that they were 101 Days Smarter! Enjoy the pictures below! This week we started a new unit in writing. This nine weeks we will focus on a variety of types of non-fiction and informational writing. We began working on our autobiographies this week. I discussed with students that an autobiography is a non-fiction story about a real person written by that person. The students spent this week outlining and planning information that they wish to share in their autobiographies. We will begin writing them next week. One of the pages in their autobiography is about what the students wish for in their future or about what they dream to become. Below I have posted videos of the students and their dreams. We also discussed and read biographies on Martin Luther King Jr. this week and talked about what his dream was for the United States and world. Hope you enjoy!
After reading several versions of The Three Little Pigs, the students worked in groups to create models of the pigs' homes using natural resources. Students used straw, popsicle sticks, and crushed up rocks to make the homes. They had to work cooperatively together to complete the art project. The students then had to write about what natural resource they would build their house out of and explain why. The students were very creative in their answers! Check out pictures of their houses below. |
